Finding Love in Melty Amethyst, a Cozy Otome Gem
We recently spent time with Melty Amethyst, a cozy, slice-of-life otome visual novel that captures the essence of finding yourself—and maybe finding love—in the heart of Tokyo. This sweet story, fully voiced in Japanese, follows a young woman who, inspired by her sister’s modeling career, moves to the city and takes on a job at a convenience store. It’s in the day-to-day routines that she forms friendships and uncovers hidden depths in the people around her, creating bonds that are both heartwarming and meaningful.
Story and Characters
In Melty Amethyst, you step into the role of a newcomer in Tokyo, juggling work and self-discovery. As the main character, you experience the ups and downs of city life while getting to know coworkers who become close friends and maybe even more. Each character brings a unique story, adding depth to the protagonist’s journey of connection, introspection, and personal growth.
Watari
You play as Watari Hotaru, a shop clerk at a convenience store in Tokyo with aspirations for something greater. Despite the lack of glamor of her part-time job, she does enjoy the work greatly, mainly due to her understanding boss and friendly coworkers. Yet, all good things must come to an end, as your superior eventually informs you that the store will be closing. Having worked there since your arrival in Tokyo, this massive change proves daunting at first, but also an opportunity to grasp for something bigger.
Sakura
Fellow store employee and Watari’s close friend, Sakura Hana is a cheerful and bubbly individual that you can look forward to seeing during your hours at work. She always looks to you for advice when struggling with a fashion choice, and takes initiative to help you out, like when she got Hiiragi to talk to you in private. Sakura is also the person who supports you the most in pursuing your interests, like finding work in a clothes store or pursuing a potential relationship with Hiiragi.
Hiiragi
Hiiragi Nao is the store’s newest hire, and it’s your job to get him up to speed. He is quiet and distant, and seemingly unapproachable at first. To some, he even comes off as rude, but in truth, this cold demeanor is nothing more than shyness. Hiiragi is a kind man, who does care for the woes of others, but has a hard time showing it. As he slowly adjusts to the store and its staff, he begins to open up, and you even learn that he’s a sizable streamer.
Bonds and Heartfelt Choices
The heart of Melty Amethyst lies in its relatable and touching relationships. It’s a very down-to-earth story of romance, friendship, growth, and those small moments that make everyday life feel special. Whenever you get to make a choice, it feels personal, leading to multiple endings that let you explore different aspects of the protagonist’s life and relationships. The game beautifully captures the quiet emotions and little struggles of pursuing your dreams, making every moment feel close to home.
Artistic Vision and Development
The creators poured their hearts into every part of the game, from the lush art style that has an almost pastel look to it, to the genuine voice acting that brings the characters to life. The visual and sound elements enhance the game’s charming “slice-of-life” tone, taking you to a world of warmth and sincerity.
What’s Next for Melty Amethyst
As players immerse themselves in Melty Amethyst, the developers are actively listening to feedback and looking forward to expanding this touching world. If you’re a fan of cozy atmospheres, or heartfelt romances, Melty Amethyst has something special waiting for you. You can check it out on Steam to experience it for yourself!
